Transparency International Estonia is a non-profit organisation operating in the public interest with the aim to prevent corruption, raise awareness about corruption as well as promote transparency and democracy in the Estonian society.
Transparency International Estonia was first established as a subsidiary organisation of Jaan Tõnisson Institute, with the name Korruptsioonivaba Eesti (translated as Corruption-Free Estonia), on the 27th of April, 2000. Until the end of 2006, it operated under the Corruption Analysis Centre in the Institute.
In 2007, we were accredited to represent the international anti-corruption organisation Transparency International in Estonia. The same year, Korruptsioonivaba Eesti or Transparency International Estonia was registered as a separate non-profit organisation to enjoy greater autonomy.
Transparency International Estonia is not a law enforcement agency and therefore does not engage in detection or investigation of corruption cases. On the other hand, we are constantly analysing, monitoring and influencing the anti-corruption policy and legislation of Estonia to ensure corruption is prevented in a systemic and structural manner. We consider raising awareness, not only amongst the general public but also specific target groups such as state and local government officials, entrepreneurs and journalists, a vital element in the anti-corruption activities.
For this purpose, we organise thematic events, conduct research, publish toolkits and carry out explanatory work through media, our website, monthly newsletters and other communication channels.
It is our principle to remain independent, apolitical and professional.
Our organisation is generally financed through projects. In the time period of 2007-2013, the Open Estonia Foundation provided operating support to our organisation. Other sources of funding through project grants are various local (NFCS, Norden, Swiss NGO Fund, Ministry of Justice, OEF) and international (European Commission, Partnership for Transparency Fund, TI Secretariat, Council of Europe) organisations. To a lesser extent, the association's budget is supplemented by the provision of services (research, analysis, trainings and consultancies), membership fees and donations.
