Border Guard Rocked by Bribery and Fraud Cases

Four employees of the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) were apprehended in September for a case of bribery amounting to 50,000 euros and a separate embezzlement case.

An internal control department of the police force is investigating one case, and the Internal Security Service (ISS) the other, Eesti Päevalehtreported today.

State prosecutor Steven-Hristo Evestus said the first case concerns giving certain companies an advantage over the competition in state procurements, and a 50-year old woman at the police's logistics department allegedly received 50,000 euros for helping companies win tenders. The head of a company has also been questioned.

The second case also involves the same department, with three men all in their 50s, accused on embezzlement. Harry Puusepp, a spokesman for the ISS, said the men purchased used police vehicles, which is not a crime, but repaired the cars with state funds, increasing the value of the vehicles.
